Bernie Sanders snatched a victory in Michigan from Hillary Clinton last Tuesday, to the surprise of pollsters and pundits alike. Though many polls were wrong, showing Sanders behind by double digits, one poll in particular may explain his win: most voters in Michigan believe free trade hurts more than it helps, with their manufacturing-heavy state one of the most affected by the mass layoffs that followed the “free trade” agreements Sanders has strongly critiqued, and which his opponent has supported.

With more voting set to take place on Tuesday, Sanders is again touting his pro-labor, anti-free trade record in the hopes of more upsets, with four of the five voting states directly and significantly affected by Clinton’s stance on trade.

Clinton currently leads in all the states that will be voting on Tuesday, but only in Florida — the state least affected by the Bill Clinton-era North American Free Trade Agreement — does she enjoy a lead bigger than the won she lost in Michigan. And in Ohio, with 159 delegates up for grabs, Sanders has managed to cut a 40 point deficit to single digits.
